Blue Button Jellyfish

We are staying at a friends really nice house in a gated community in Miramar Beach, FL.  So not me, but hey, I can adapt to the upper class lifestyle.  I can give it a try, anyway:)

The beach is beautiful and covered with Blue Button Jellyfish.  A quick look in Wikipedia said that these aren’t really jellyfish, but cooperative colonies of tiny animals.

We made it

7 hour drive.  Very humid here, but the palm trees and flowers are perfect.  The kids did great on the way down.  A few pictures:

All packed and ready to go

We are leaving for a quick visit to Destin, Florida tomorrow morning.  I sold 34 yellow shrimp and shipped them out.  Our neighbors are coming to feed the cat, dog and fish.  My daughter and I made up a dozen or so little envelopes labeled “Thursday” “Friday” “Saturday” , and put the appropriate food in each, for each tank.  That way they won’t overfeed the fish.  I’m still worried about them, though.  I’m sure the fish will be just fine without me for 5 days, but still.  They are my fish!

I am looking forward to going, it’s been 6 years since my last vacation.  6 years!!!  I think back to “my other life” (before kids and a husband) when I’d just drive to Canada after work for a weekend just because I felt like it, or how excited I was planning and going to Europe and Australia. I would even plan trips I’d probably never take, but I would read guide books and plan them anyway.   All I ever wanted to be in “my other life” was an expat.  Maybe not the greatest of ambitions to some, but it was to me.

But now, I’ve been married for 9 years, I have 2 little kids running around, and going anywhere just doesn’t feel as exciting as I think it should and I don’t know why.   My passport has expired, my Australian VISA has expired, and looking at the stamps inside of it makes me sad.  Somewhere in the past 9 years I’ve lost me.

But enough of my pity party, time to make sure everything is packed for everyone.  We are driving there with the inlaws, have to be at their house at 5.30am, get carseats in and everything packed and we will be on the road by 6am.  It will be awesome to stick my toes in the sand again.  And I’m looking forward to collecting things on the beach with my daughter.  We are bringing her metal detector.

Pictures to come!
