Yum, snail eggs…

My  Anentome helena have been laying single eggs all over the glass and heater in the tank.  I have at least a dozen empty ramshorn and pond snail eggs shells.  They seem to eat, then disappear for a day or so.  I’ve never actually seen one eat another snail, but I know they are.

The second shows one of the eggs that looks different then the top picture.  I’m not sure if it’s older or newer or not viable or what.  And the last picture is just for size comparison, a. helena eggs top left, then a. helena and one of my mystery snails who is about golf ball size, and 1/2 inch shrimp.

Playing Hookie

My DD has bad allergies, and she woke up this morning coughing and generally just miserable.  But as the morning went on, she seemed to improve and I wanted — needed–  to get out of the house so I packed up the kids and we went to Old Hickory Trail.  We’ve been there before and it’s a good place to go that’s only a few miles from the house.  It lets the kids run off energy and gives me a chance to smell the earth.  Not the best place for DD since she’s allergic to cedar trees, but it smells SO GOOD there.  I mean does any tree smell better then cedar?  And it grows like weeds here.  So a quick squirt of some new nasal spray for her and off we went.

Last time we went I didn’t notice they had a small beach area, but DD did and insisted we go so we went back to the house, changed into bathing suits and went back.

I’m not a big fan of water you can’t see the bottom of, and since this was a reservoir, you couldn’t see the bottom here.  Plus there was a ton of crane and duck crap on the beach, and it didn’t smell so good.  Because we’ve had little rain the water level is low and there is hardly any current.  But the kids loved the soft sand and trying to catch the little fish that were around the shore.

There were a lot of gross, nasty plant stuff on shore.  But actually after looking closer at some of the plants,  I saw some plants that looked like aquarium plants.  I figured since it was all over and washed up that I could take some.

My convicts and cherry shrimp immediately went to work eating whatever was on the plants and now they are beautiful.  I don’t know if they will last in my tank, but they look nicer then they did washed up on the shore.

Anentome Helena

All the way from the Netherlands, my 4 Anentome helena arrived today in perfect condition.  I put the little guys in the cherry shrimp tank, and they were immediately surrounded by shrimp eating who knows what off their shells.  They are beautiful snails, and I can see green, yellow, orange and brown stripes on their shells.

In other news, 3rd grade is going good for DD.  We  haven’t had any rain for the entire month of August.  My neighbor leaves for Iraq for 6 months tomorrow.  I sold a ton of yellow and cherry shrimp, so I’ve bought some snowball shrimp and will breed them.  Petco’s “$1.00 per gallon” sale is tomorrow, and I’m hoping to pick up a 29 gallon to put my 2 convicts in.  And I’m going to be 41 in a few weeks.

That’s all for now! :)
