John W. Johnson, undertaker and furniture dealer, Sheldon was born in Sweden November 13, 1847. Came to US with parents in 1854. Settled in Beaver Township, Iroquois Co, IL. In 1855 his father died, and he went to Chicago with his mother, lived there 2 years, when upon the marriage of his mother returned back to farm and lived there until 1863 at which time he enlisted in Co. C, 51st reg, Ill. Inf and served until Feb 21, 1865.

He was in battles of Rocky Face, Resaca, Kennesaw mts, Atlanta campaign, and Franklin where he was twice wounded and carried from the filed and confined in hospital until Feb. 1865. He soon after joined his regime and remained with it until his discharge from army in 1865. He returned home and bought out other heir to the farm and conducted it until 1869. Then rented farm and visited native country and principal countries in Europe. Returned home and spent summer of 1870 in grocery store in Kentland, Indiana and taught school in fall. In 1872 he bought a grain building, the first grain elevator in Donovan. He also engage in the hardware business, but sold out this to go into real estate, with Fielde, firm, to be known as Fielde and Johnson, again in furniture and undertaking, which proved very profitable.

March 16, 1873 married Miss Emma Christine Johnson who was born in Sweden, had 3 children, two living, Lillian Grace and Hilma Mae, and baby Eddie their first child died when 9 months old. In addition to his business interests, Mr. Johnson retained his farm of 190 acres in Beaver Township, which he has rented, another child Carrie Sophia born July 26, 1880 and a son Edward July 15, 1882. (end of article in book). John William Johnson died Jan 24, 1884. Emma Christine Johnson Died Dec 6, 1932. Both died of pneumonia. Emma Christine Johnson was born in Sweden June 11, 1849, and Edward Johnson (son) died June 16, 1938, 9am.
